No one likes an accident. Those featured in this section come from media sources and often lack the detail of the circumstances that may have contributed to the tragic outcomes. Even so, by being aware of the types of accidents that have happened in the past may help to prevent or lead to action to prevent similar accidents occurring in the future.


 

02/10/10 - Devon - UK: Tributes to grandmother and shopkeeper who died in fall from horse

Tributes have been paid to a popular shopkeeper who has died in a tragic accident after falling from her horse.

Grandmother-of-four Gillian Ashley, 60, was discovered by holidaymakers lying on a track in Beer, East Devon, a short distance from her unmounted horse.

Police say Mrs Ashley – who owned Beer Village Store – suffered a fractured spine in the accident on Thursday.

They are now appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information as to what caused the accident or could have alarmed the horse. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Police on 08452 777 444, quoting log number 428 300910.

16/03/10 – Warwickshire - UK: Horse killed after being thrown from trailer on motorway

A horse was killed on the M40 motorway after being thrown into oncoming traffic after its trailer jack-knifed flinging the rear ramp open.

The accident happened on the way home from an evening competition when a van swerved in front of the Nissan pick-up truck towing a trailer with two horses.

19/07/09 – Ireland: Woman out riding in critical condition after being hit by a truck

A woman is in a critical condition in hospital after she was hit by a truck.  The accident happened on 19 July (10 a.m) as she was out horse riding on the R666 road to Fermoy, Co Cork.

21/07/09 Update

The Irish Independent reports that the 52 year old woman remains in a critical condition, having suffered serious head and chest injuries. The horse was killed instantly in the accident.

17/07/09 – Cornwall, UK: Girl kicked by horse airlifted to hospital

A girl had to be airlifted to hospital after she was kicked by her horse which she is thought to have been walking alongside.

10/07/09 - North Carolina - USA: Woman dies on trail ride

A Pennsylvania woman on a trail ride died on Thursday evening (9 July) when the horse she was riding in Madison County reared and fell on her.

10/07/09 - Worcestershire - UK: Man falls from horse on old railway

A man in his 60’s, found unconscious, was airlifted to hospital after falling from his horse on a disused railway track in Prescott, Cleobury Mortimer.  It’s believed that the horse may have rolled on him. He was treated at the scene for a minor head and hand injury and taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further assessment and treatment.
